Sayen Named to CSC Academic All-America Third Team

AUSTIN, Texas – Michigan Tech cross country and track & field senior, Clayton Sayen has been named to the CSC (formerly CoSIDA) Academic All-America Third Team, the College of Sports Communicators announced Thursday.

This marks the first feat of a Husky since Jason Saliga earned CoSIDA Third Team Academic All-America honors in the 2016-17 season.

Sayen, a local of Houghton, Michigan, capped off a historic collegiate campaign for the Huskies in the 2022-23 year. In the fall, he placed 16th overall at the NCAA Division II Cross Country National Championships, the best individual finish in program history. His low-stick effort also helped the Huskies to a 10th-place team finish, also tops in program history. Sayen earned USTFCCCA All-Region with his 11th-place finish at the Midwest Regional Cross Country Championships to go with fifth at the conference championships.

On the track, Sayen opened the outdoor campaign with GLIAC Track Athlete of the Week honors following NCAA Provisional Qualifying times in the 800m (1:51.30) and the 1,500m (3:47.98). He rewrote the conference record books, lowering his conference record over 1,500m, winning his second straight 1,500m title at the GLIAC Conference Championships running 3:47.22. He also anchored the 4x400m that took second-place just shy of a new school record, clocking 3:18.94. Following his conference efforts, he was tabbed USTFCCCA All-Region for the 1,500m. Sayen rounded out his career by running a season-best time of 3:45.27 at the St. Francis Fighting Chance Invite before placing 15th overall at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Pueblo, Colorado.

Sayen earned his master's in business administration in May with a GPA of 3.87.

The Division II team boasted a 3.90 average GPA with the first team checking in at 3.93.

The Division II Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II national governance structure to assist CSC with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2022-23 Division II Academic All-America® program.
