Track & Field Competes at MSU Spartan Invitational

EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan Tech track & field team continued the beginning of its 2019 season at the MSU Spartan Invitational in East Lansing, Michigan. Highlights from Ralph Young Field for the Huskies included position wins by the Michigan Tech 'A' 4x400m relay team and Samantha Kurkowski finishing second in the 3000m Steeplechase, in addition to 20 personal best marks being set.

The 4x400m relay team, consisting of John Bailey, Dante Cyrus, Jacob Namyst, and Nate Nannfedlt, finished with a time of 3:22.45. Their time put them 1.66 seconds ahead of the Aquinas College 'A' team. In the Steeplechase, Kurkowski crossed the finish line with a time of 11:35.46, just 3.17 seconds behind Annie Needs of Calvin College.

There were a number of Michigan Tech student-athletes finishing in the top 10 of their respective events. On the men's side, Riley Roquet finished tied for sixth in the pole vault with a mark of 4.42m (14'6''), James Huey finished eighth in the triple jump with a mark of 12.28m (40'3.5"), followed by Ben Mahonen in ninth with a mark of 11.98m (39'3.75"), while Derek Flory took ninth in the long jump with a mark of 6.32m (20'9").

On the track, Nannfedlt and Cyrus both finished in the top five of the 400m hurdles with times of 49.82 and 50.10, while Zach Okma took 10th with a time of 50.94, and Korson Mundinger took fourth in the 100m hurdles with a time of 11.34 and eighth in the 200m dash with a time of 22.86.

On the women's side, Chloe stratch finished first with a time of 18:52.84 in the unseeded 5000m. Kayla Brei hit a mark of 9.96m (32'8.25'') to finish eighth in the triple jump, while Kath Schneider placed sixth in the 3000m Steeplechase with a time of 12:09.85, Erin Lipp took seventh in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:08.88, and Theresa Passe crossed the finish line of the 800m at 2:19.15 to place 10th. In the 4x400m relay, the 'A' team of Jesse Jacobusse, Laura Lyons, Madisyn Estkowski, and Erin Lipp crossed the line at 4:10.50 to place seventh.

"We had a bit of a mixed bag in performances today," said head coach Jake Isaacson. "We had about 20 personal bests, so we did show some progress. I'm ok with where we're at, but am by no means satisfied."
