Three Track Records Fall in South Carolina

CONWAY, S.C. — The Michigan Tech track and field teams came away from its spring break trip to South Carolina with six top-five finishes, three new school records and an NCAA provisional qualifying mark. The Huskies participated in hot, sunny weather at the Coastal Carolina Invitational on Mar. 11-12.

The women's 4x100 relay team of Aimee Allen, Gabrielle Hummel, Ashley Veale, and Jamie Dompier placed fourth with a time of 49.07 to reset Tech's school record in that event (the former record was 50.64 set in 2014 by Jamie Dompier, Lauren Raiford, Hannah Schnack and Ashley Veale).

That same relay team also ran the eighth fastest 4x400 time in school history with a 4:03.06, which was good for seventh place.

Sophomore Ashley Veale had a strong performance in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:03.98 to finish third and reset her own school record (1:04.85, 2014).

Junior Jamie Dompier ran the seventh fastest 200m dash time in school history at 25.84 seconds to finish 14th.

Junior Jenna Burns threw the seventh best shot put in school history with a toss of 12.22 meters for ninth place.

Junior Kyle Petermann had a excellent start to the outdoor season with a discus throw of 50.15m to finish second and extend his school record (49.94m, 2014). The mark was also good enough to provisionally qualify for the NCAA Championship.

Senior Jevon Maddox finished second in the 400m dash with a time of 49.26 seconds.

Junior Jason Saliga withstood the heat as the third collegiate finisher in the 3000m, finishing in 8:58.03. It was the sixth-fastest time in school history.

Junior Jake Jurkowski tied for fifth place in the pole vault with a height of 14-05.25.

"Our assistant coaches did a great job in getting our athletes ready for their first outdoor competition," said head coach Joe Haggenmiller. "It was really exciting to see the records fall and the provisional mark set in our first competition, and I look forward to seeing what the rest of the season has in store for us."

Michigan Tech's next action is scheduled for April 1 at the Viking Olympics hosted by Augustana College in Rock Island, Ill.
