Petermann, Buckner and Poli Compete at Last Chance Meets

RESULTS: Aquinas | Hillsdale

HILLSDALE, Mich. — Three Michigan Tech track & field athletes competed in last chance meets over the last two days in hopes of qualifying for NCAA Nationals later this month. Aquinas College hosted a twilight meet on Wednesday (May 6) while Hillsdale hosted another today (May 7).

While none of the three gained the NCAA Provisional mark they were seeking, all three put up performances worthy of the top 10 in school history.

Kyle Petermann threw the discus 149-4 at Aquinas College, but added 10 feet to his distance today for a 159-9. That's his best effort of 2015 and the third-best in school history, all of which are his. The provisional mark is 161-11.

Casey Buckner continued to improve his personal best in the javelin. The freshman went 169-3 at Aquinas to win the meet and post the seventh-best throw in school history. His toss of 152-0 at Hillsdale was good for second place.

In the pole vault, Erika Poli competed in the Aquinas meet only. She cleared 10-6, tying for second place at the meet. The height matches the 10th best in Tech history.

"Kyle, Casey and Erika all had good performances," said Tech coach Joe Haggenmiller. "It was good to see Kyle toss it out there close to provisional distance. Hopefully he can add another meter or two and be in the mix for NCAA Nationals."

Several more Tech athletes will be in action at other meets across the Midwest tomorrow trying to hit the NCAA standards.
