Track Men Third, Women Fifth at UW-Whitewater

RESULTS: Rex Foster Invitational at UW-Whitewater

WHITEWATER, Wis. — The Michigan Tech track and field teams competed for the second day in a row in Wisconsin, taking part in the UW-Whitewater Rex Foster Invitational. The men's team finished third of eight competing schools while the women were fifth of eight.

The top performances of the day came at the end of the day when both 4x400 relay teams earned wins. The men completed the 1,600 meters in 3:29.04 while the women's time of 4:01.32 was the second-fastest in school history.

Shane McGrath continued his success in the 400 hurdles with a win in a time of 57.20. Ryan Mattson was also a winner with a 10,000 meters time of 34:17.92.

Antwon Curtis, taking part in his first meet of 2015, posted a sub-11 time of 10.99 in the 100 meters preliminary before finishing second at 11:09 in the final. In the 200 meters, Jevon Maddox and Isaac Pringle were third and fourth with times of 22.59 and 22.89.

Other Huskies men to finish top five in running events were Chad Pollock in the 800 (4th, 2:02.51), Jacob Jarvis in the 110 hurdles (4th, 16.29) and Derek Brandt in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (5th, 10:18.15).

Top Tech male field event peformances came in the high jump, pole vault, shot put and discus. High jumpers James Sutton and Mike Fisher both cleared 6-0.75 to take second and third. Jake Jurkowski vaulted 14-7.25 to match his season best and take second. Jake Wiedemeier was fifth in the event at 13-7.25. Kyle Petermann's discus toss of 150-1 was good for fourth place. Michael Frahm posted a 46-4.25 throw in the shot for fifth.

On the women's side, Erika Poli set a new Tech mark in the pole vault, clearing 10-11.75 to break the old mark of 10-9 set in 2009.

Jamie Dompier continued her strong season with a second place result in the 200 meters. Just one day after resetting her own school record to 25.65, she tied the old mark at 25.78. Aimee Allen placed fifth in the 200 with a 26.50 clocking. Allen also had a good showing in the long jump, where she spanned 17-1.5 for second place.

Noelle Savage placed first in the 10,000 meters with a time of 41:51.21.

Deedra Irwin and Liz Bloch both placed in the top five in the 1,500. Irwin was third in 5:00.13 while Bloch went 5:05.42 for fifth.

"There were no earth-shattering results today. It was chilly and windy once again, but we gave it a good go," said Tech coach Joe Haggenmiller. "I was happy to see us wrap up the day with the 4x400 wins in comfortable fashion."

Michigan Tech will have athletes competing at both the St. Benedict/St. John's Invitational in Collegeville, Minn., and the UW-Platteville Invitational in Platteville, Wis., next weekend (Apr. 11-12).
