Track Opens 2015 Season at Coastal Carolina Invitational

CONWAY, S.C. — The Michigan Tech track and field teams opened their seasons at the Coastal Carolina Invitational over the weekend. The Huskies had five top-five finishes in different events during the meet including a school-record performance.

Sean Pengelly ran the 5,000 meters in a time of 14:37.19 to finish second in the race and reset Tech's school record (14:53.60, Ben Schaut, 1999). The effort was also good for an NCAA provisional time.

Jason Saliga was the top collegiate finisher in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, as he turned in a time of 9:34.78. Teammate Brandon Kampstra was two spots back in third at 9:49.55.

Nate Hood had two strong performances with a third-place finish in the triple jump at 13.54 meters and a sixth in the long jump at 6.69 meters.

Jevon Maddox was the second collegiate racer to cross in the men's 400 meters, circling the track in 48.73 seconds.

The top women's performer on the weekend was Anna-Catharina Wilhelm, who posted a time of 11:52.15 in the 3,000 meters and took 14th among collegiate racers.

"It was nice to see Sean open the season with a school-record performance," said Tech coach Joe Haggenmiller. "We definitely had some results that we can build on this season.

"We didn't have our full team at this meet, but it was a good start to get some experience for the rest of the year."

Michigan Tech will return to action on the track on Mar. 27-28 at the Viking Olympics at Augustana College in Rock Island, Ill.
