Steman Scores Twice as No. 17 Huskies Tied No. 18 Bowling Green 4-4 Play Video

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Dylan Steman scored twice and Matt Roy and Joel L'Esperance notched one goal apiece as the No. 17 Michigan Tech hockey team skated to a 4-4 tie with No. 18 Bowling Green tonight (Jan. 29) in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association showdown at the BGSU Ice Arena.

The tie extends Tech's WCHA road unbeaten streak to seven games (5-0-2). The Huskies' last loss in league play on the road was Oct. 23.

"I thought it was a really good college hockey game," said head coach Mel Pearson. "It was exciting with two ranked teams and I thought we played well. The first period was one of the best periods we've had in a long time. Bowling Green is a good team and scoring four goals on them is a big accomplishment, but there are some things we need to work on going into tomorrow night."

Steman struck first 10:03 into the contest to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead. Malcolm Gould made a terrific play at center to chip the puck through his legs to Steman in the neutral zone, sending Tech through center with a 2-on-1. Steman dished to Alex Petan as they crossed the offensive blue line, found space and deposited a great return feed from Petan into the back of the net.

Then, with just 4.1 seconds left in the first stanza, Roy buried to double the Michigan Tech advantage. After Jake Lucchini won a battle along the wall, he scooped the puck to the point for Roy. Roy settled the pass and blasted a shot off the outside of the net. The rebound hit the end wall, bounced back to the goal and in.

Bowling Green cut the lead in half midway through the second, but L'Esperance notched a power-play goal at 10:44 to quickly answer for the Huskies. Shane Hanna held a clearing attempt in at the left point and threaded a pass to Petan along the blue line. Petan waited to create traffic before floating the puck towards the net, where L'Esperance redirected it just inside the far post.

Another BGSU goal late in the second period made it 3-2 after 40 minutes, but Steman's second of the night 10:46 into the third gave Tech another two-goal lead.

L'Esperance worked his way to the net and tried to stuff a wrap around past Nell, but the puck slid off his stick and up the slot to Steman. The center turned and batted it over Nell's leg and in for his fourth goal of the year.

The Falcons rallied and scored twice in a 14-second span to tie the game and force overtime, where neither team capitalized and eventually settled for a tie.

Jamie Phillips started for the Huskies and made 22 saves.

Michigan Tech (13-7-5 overall; 10-6-3 WCHA) and Bowling Green conclude the two-game WCHA set tomorrow (Jan. 30) at 7 p.m.
