TALKING POINTS

• Michigan Tech meets Michigan in the 51st annual Great Lakes Invitational title game

tonight (Dec. 30) at 7 p.m. ET. The game, which will be played at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, will be broadcast live on FOX Sports Detroit.

• Tech is seeking its 11th GLI crown. The Huskies have previously won the event in 1968, 1970, 1971, 1974, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1979, 1980 and 2012.

• The Huskies and Wolverines have squared off in nine Great Lakes Invitational championship games during the 51-year history of the event (Tech holds a 6-3 edge in those contests). The two program played for the GLI on six occasions during the 1970s with the Huskies winning five of those outings. The last championship battle between Tech and Michigan was in 2007, where the Wolverines earned a 1-0 win in double overtime.

• The Huskies will look to continue their recent stretch of success against in-state opponents tonight against the Wolverines. Tech is 17-5-3 over its last 25 games vs. teams from #PureMichigan, including five series sweeps, 11 wins away from the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena and a 6-3-2 mark during the 2015-16 campaign.

• Eighteen Tech players have seen game action against Michigan during their collegiate careers. Senior Alex Petan owns a team-best seven points (3-4) in six games vs. UM, while goaltender Jamie Phillips is 2-1-0 with a 1.68 goals against average and .936 save percentage.

WAY OF THE ROAD

Michigan Tech is on an impressive run away from the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena this season. In 12 games away from home, the Huskies are 8-2-2, are currently riding a nine-game unbeaten streak (7-0-2) and have scored an average of 3.36 goals-per-game. MTU's 37 goals in 11 road outings ranks first in the WCHA and is the third-highest total in the nation. Tech is 22-7-2 away from home dating back to last season.

SERIES-OPENING SUCCESS

The Huskies have been consistently good in the first game of weekend sets during the 2015-16 campaign. Tech is 7-2-1 in the first game of a series and has posted a 5-2-1 mark on Friday nights. Perhaps even more impressive is MTU's ability to win its first game away from home, which it has done in five-of-seven series openers.

RACE TO THREE

With a veteran cast of defensemen and one of the best goaltenders in all of college hockey, it's no surprise that Michigan Tech is unbeaten when scoring three or more times in a game (the Huskies own a 9-0-1 mark when they reach the three-goal plateau). On the reverse side, Tech has struggled to win games when its opponent notches three or more - the Huskies are 2-6-1 when it surrenders three-plus.

LEADING BY EXAMPLE

The Huskies have enjoyed big contributions from their upperclassmen during the first half of the season. Entering the GLI, Tech's seniors had combined for a WCHA-high 49 points (19-30) while the team's juniors were tied for second among junior classes in the league with 47 points (18-29). Michigan Tech's 16 upperclassmen (eight seniors, eight juniors) came into the week with a combined 96 points - the highest combined total in the WCHA and the seventh-best total in all of NCAA Division I college hockey.

STAT LEADERS

Michigan Tech is once again one of the leaders in nearly all statistical categories among WCHA programs. The Huskies began the GLI ranking first in scoring (3.06 goals/game), scoring margin (+14) and power-play efficiency (16/61, 26.2%). Tech is also in the top- half among WCHA foes in team defense (3rd, 2.28 goals against/game) and shots on goal margin (2nd, +123).

RED-HOT HEINONEN

Junior winger Tyler Heinonen ran up a seven-game goal-scoring run in November and early December, the longest such streak by a Husky since Gord Salt scored in 10 straight during the 1978-79 season. The Delano, Minn., native led the WCHA in goals (6), points (10), power-play goals (3) and game-winners (3) during November and was named the WCHA Player of the Month for his efforts. Heinonen also collected WCHA Offensive Player of the Week honors on Nov. 23.

PETAN AMONG NATIONAL LEADERS

Senior captain Alex Petan enters the GLI the fifth-leading scorer among active DI players with 121 career points. Petan, who has scored double-digit goals in each of his four seasons in Houghton, currently leads the Huskies in points (19) and is second with 10 goals. The Delta, B.C., native is in the midst of a six-game point streak on which he's tallied 11 points (6-5).

LAST TIME OUT

Brent Baltus scored with one minute remaining in overtime to give the Huskies a 3-2 come-from-behind win over Michigan State in yesterday's #GLI51 semifinals. Tech trailed 2-0 entering the third period but goals by Alex Gillies and Jake Lucchini forced overtime and set the stage for Baltus to score the game-winner. The rally marked the third time this season the Huskies have battled back from a two-goal deficit against Michigan State.

IN THE NHL

Three former Michigan Tech players have skated in the National Hockey League this season as Tanner Kero (Chicago), Jujhar Khaira (Edmonton) and John Scott (Arizona) have all spent time in the NHL during the early part of the 2015-16 campaign.

NHL DRAFT PICKS

Five players on the Michigan Tech roster have been selected in the NHL Entry Draft. Tech's five drafted players is the most of any program in the WCHA.

The list of players drafted includes:

• Senior goaltender Jamie Phillips is a pick of the Winnipeg Jets, who took him in the seventh round (190th overall) of the 2012 NHL Draft.

• Junior blue-liner Cliff Watson was selected in the sixth round (168th overall) of the 2012 NHL Draft by the San Jose Sharks.

• Sophomore defenseman Dane Birks was drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the sixth round (164th overall) of the 2013 NHL Draft.

• Sophomore defender Matt Roy went to the Los Angeles Kings during the seventh round (194th overall) of the 2015 NHL Draft.

• Freshman forward Jake Jackson was taken by the San Jose Sharks in the seventh round (201st overall) of the 2013 NHL Draft.

BREWSTER SERVING ON STAFF OF U.S. NATIONAL JUNIOR TEAM

Michigan Tech athletic trainer Brian Brewster is in Finland working on the staff of the U.S. National Junior Team at the 2016 IIHF World Junior Championship. Brewster is one of several ties between Michigan Tech and USA Hockey. Brewster has previously represented the U.S. at numerous international events, including serving on the staff of the gold medal- winning 2010 U.S. Paralympic Sled Hockey Team and several stints with the U.S. National Inline Team during the International Ice Hockey Federation World Inline Championships.
