HIGHLIGHTS

SAULT STE MARIE, Mich. – Alex Petan scored a goal and goaltender Jamie Phillips turned in a 20-save effort as the Michigan Tech hockey team skated to a 1-1 draw with Lake Superior State tonight (Dec. 11) in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association contest at Taffy Abel Arena.

The tie extends the Huskies' road unbeaten streak to seven-straight (5-0-2), a run on which they've outscored opponents 31-14.

"It was a tough game tonight," said Tech head coach Mel Pearson. "We have to be a little more patient around the net and take advantage of our scoring chances, but we got a big point on the road and did a good job of limiting them offensively. Our defensive core did a really good job tonight with getting pucks up the ice and not turning the puck over."

The Lakers scored 5:54 into the contest but Petan answered to knot the game at 1-1 just 45 seconds later. The play started when Malcolm Gould shoveled the puck up the wall to Shane Hanna. Hanna settled the pass and quickly fired towards the net, but the shot bounced off a leg and right to Petan in the slot. Petan grabbed it and moved to his right before firing a wrister over the glove of Lake Superior State goaltender Gordon Defiel.

Neither team found the back of the net from that point on despite several chances both ways.

The goal pushed Petan's point streak to five games. The senior captain has found the score sheet in eight of the last nine games and 11 of the 16 contests he's played this season.

Michigan Tech (9-6-2 overall; 8-6-1 WCHA) and Lake Superior State conclude the two-game conference series tomorrow (Dec. 12) at 7:07 p.m. The game can be seen live on WCHA.tv and Dirk Hembroff will have the call on Mix 93 and Pasty.net.
