Tech Hockey Completes Sweep at Alaska Play Video

FAIRBANKS, Alaska – Brent Baltus, Tyler Heinonen and Alex Petan all scored goals and Jamie Phillips turned in a 27-save performance as No. 19 Michigan Tech completed a two-game sweep of Alaska with a 3-1 victory tonight (Nov. 28) in a WCHA contest at Carlson Center.

The win closes out a 6-1-1 month for the Huskies, who have now gone 8-2-1 over their last 11 games.

"That's a huge win," said head coach Mel Pearson. "Our guys did an excellent job of battling hard and although it wasn't our prettiest game, we did what we needed to do to get the win. Jamie really solidified us on the backend tonight and covered for us when we made some mistakes."

Baltus gave Tech a 1-0 lead 15:02 into the first when he walked off the wall on a power play, used an Alaska defender as a screen and sent a low wrister just inside the near post. Matt Roy earned the lone helper on the goal.

Fairbanks knotted the game at 1-1 59 seconds into the middle stanza, but Tech responded with a power-play marker midway through the frame to take the lead for good. Petan started the play when he grabbed the puck at the point and moved to the middle before firing towards the net. Heinonen skated to the front as the shot was taken and redirected it past Alaska goalie Jesse Jenks to make it 2-1.

Petan clinched the win with an empty-netter in the final minute of play.

Heinonen, who was named the WCHA Offensive Player of the Week after posting six points vs. Michigan State, pushed his point streak to four games. Petan notched another multi-point effort and has found the score sheet in five of the last six outings.

Michigan Tech (9-4-1 overall; 8-4-0 WCHA) returns to the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena next weekend (Dec. 4-5) for a two-game set vs. Alaska Anchorage. Tickets to both games – Tech's final home appearances of 2015 – are available at the SDC Ticket Office or online at BuyHuskiesTickets.com.
