HOUGHTON, Mich. – Tyler Heinonen and Malcolm Gould scored goals for No. 20 Michigan Tech but the Huskies fell to No. 15 Bowling Green, 3-2, in the series finale tonight (Nov. 14) in front of 3,051 at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena.
With the Falcons leading, 3-2, late in the third period, Heinonen appeared to tie the game when he followed up his own shot and batted home a rebound. But, after reviewing the play for an extended period of time, it was determined that the Huskies were offside.
"I thought it was an even game and not much separating the two teams tonight," said head coach Mel Pearson. "We knew they'd push back tonight and they did. We did a good job to battle back and I was happy with a lot of guys in our lineup tonight."
Heinonen opened the scoring 7:41 into the contest when he notched a power-play goal. Joel L'Esperance won a race to a loose puck and sent it in front to Heinonen, who tapped it into the open net to give Tech a 1-0 lead. Shane Hanna also assisted on the play.
Bowling Green struck twice on a five-minute power play to grab its first lead of the weekend before the end of the opening frame, but the Huskies battled back to tie it at 2-2 5:32 into the second.
Alex Petan started the scoring play when he skated the puck out of the defensive zone and through center. Petan dished it to Michael Neville, who fed Gould with a perfect pass at the top of the left circle for a rocket one-timer that beat Bowling Green goaltender Tommy Burke on the blocker side.
The Falcons notched the eventual game-winner four minutes and change into the third before the controversial no-goal late in the period.
Goaltender Jamie Phillips started in net for the Huskies and turned aside 22 shots.
Michigan Tech (6-4-0 overall; 6-4-0 WCHA) heads to East Lansing, Mich., next weekend (Nov. 21-22) for a pair of nonconference games against Michigan State. Puck-drop Saturday is set for 7 p.m. before the two teams conclude the series Sunday at 4 p.m.
