Hockey Makes Late Charge but Falls to Ferris State, 3-2

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – Malcolm Gould scored twice and goaltender Jamie Phillips made 29 saves, but the No. 16 Michigan Tech hockey team couldn't tie the game late despite a dominating third period and fell to Ferris State, 3-2, in the series finale at Ewigleben Arena tonight (Oct. 17).

"You can't dig yourself a hole on the road in a rink like this," said head coach Mel Pearson. "This is a tough place to play and Ferris is a good team. Our special teams weren't as good as they were last night for the most part. At the end you saw the urgency we need to play with from start to finish.

"Overall, there were a lot of good things this weekend. We got two points on the road which is important. We'll keep working and improving."

Gould opened the scoring and got the Huskies on the board 4:58 into the middle period. The play started when Chris Leibinger fired a shot from the right point towards the net. Gould, who was posted up in the slot, tipped the puck and redirected it between the arm and body of Ferris goalie Charles Williams to give Tech a 1-0 lead.

The Bulldogs rallied and scored three straight – two in the second and one midway through the third – to build a 3-1 edge late in the contest.

Gould pulled Tech back within one when he netted his second of the night at 17:12 of the final period. With the puck bouncing in front of the net, Gould swooped in and settled the puck before sending it upstairs over a handful of bodies and Williams.

Mark Auk also had an assist for the Huskies, who outshot Ferris State 32-20 in the final 40 minutes of play.

Michigan Tech (1-1-0 overall; 1-1-0 WCHA) resumes play next weekend (Oct. 23-24) with a home-and-home series against Northern Michigan. Friday's contest will take place in Marquette before the two teams shift to Houghton and the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena for the series finale Saturday. Both games can be seen live on TV6 and can be heard on Mix 93.
