Five-Goal Third Period Gives Tech Series Sweep

HOUGHTON, Mich. – Five different Michigan Tech players scored goals and the three Huskies goalies – Jamie Phillips, Matt Wintjes and Devin Kero – combined for an 18-save shutout as Tech completed a two-game exhibition sweep over Laurentian with a 5-0 win tonight (Oct. 10) at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena.
"It was a hard-fought game," said Tech head coach Mel Pearson. "Overall it was a good weekend. We needed to work through some adversity and play in a close game. I thought our team did a great job to come out in the third period and get the job done. We were able to get everybody into the games this weekend and everyone came out healthy so we're happy."
The Huskies exploded in the third period, netting five goals to blow open what was a scoreless contest through 40 minutes.
Michael Neville starting the goal flurry when he collected a rebound in front of the net, moved to his backhand and beat Laurentian goaltender Joel Virnnuil at 2:40. Jake Jackson made it 2-0 when he fought through a defender and batted a loose puck home at 4:14.
Alex Petan blasted a one-timer off the post and in for a power-play goal just past the midway point of the period, and Patrick Anderson made a great play to force a turnover before sending the puck into the top corner from the slot 38 seconds later to give Tech a 4-0 cushion.
The Huskies closed the scoring late as Alex Gillies collected a loose puck at the side of the net and slid it over the line with just 16 second to play.
Mark Auk and Malcolm Gould both notched a pair of assists. Auk added a game-high eight shots on goal and seven Huskies registered plus-two ratings.
Kero, who played the final 20 minutes, made six saves and earned the victory. Phillips started the game in net for Michigan Tech and stopped all nine shots he faced before Wintjes entered the game and made two saves in the middle frame.
Michigan Tech officially opens its 2015-16 season next weekend (Oct. 16-17) with a pair of Western Collegiate Hockey Association contests at Ferris State. Both games start at 7:07 p.m. ET and can be viewed live on WCHA.tv.
NOTES: Michigan Tech's all-time record against Laurentian is now 9-0-0. The Huskies haven't lost an exhibition game since the 2008-09 campaign … Tech outshot Laurentian, 58-17 … Eleven Huskies had at least one point in the game … Michigan Tech went 1-5 on the power play and recorded 18 shots, while Laurentian was held scoreless in five opportunities with the man advantage … The attendance at the MacInnes Student Ice Arena was 3,026.
