Baltus, Boeing Score Twice as Huskies Win Opener 5-1

HOUGHTON, Mich. – Brett Boeing and Brent Baltus each scored twice and Mark Auk added a single goal as the Michigan Tech hockey team opened its season with a 5-1 exhibition win over Laurentian University tonight (Oct. 9) in front of 3,580 at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena.

The win ups Tech's all-time record again Laurentian to 8-0-0 and keeps the Huskies unbeaten in exhibition play since the 2008-09 campaign.

"I thought it was a good game, especially when we haven't played for six months," said head coach Mel Pearson. "We got a lot of good things out of it and got a lot of guys involved. Overall it was a good, solid game and an unbelievable crowd for a game like this. It was just tremendous to see our fans and students."

After a scoreless opening frame, the Huskies struck for three quick goals early in the second to grab control of the game. Boeing starting the flurry when he drove to the net and knocked in a perfect centering pass from Reid Sturos at 3:49. Then, just two minutes later, Auk picked up a pass from Max Vallis at the point and found the top corner through traffic. Baltus made it 3-0 when he one-timed a Jake Lucchini feed into a wide-open net at 9:22.

Laurentian scored early in the final period to make it 3-1, but Boeing answered midway through the stanza with a pretty redirection on a two-on-one before Baltus closed the scoring with a power-play tally at 17:57.

Lucchini, Matt Roy and CJ Eick all had multi-point games for the Huskies, while goaltender Jamie Phillips started and turned in a 16-save performance.
