HOUGHTON, Mich. — Michigan Tech suffered a 3-0 setback to No. 6-ranked Ferris State tonight in WCHA hockey at the MacInnes Student Ice Arena. The visiting Bulldogs scored one goal each period to earn the series split.
Tech (8-14-6, 6-8-4 WCHA) and Ferris State (18-6-3, 13-3-2 WCHA) both had 25 shots on net. The Huskies could not get one past FSU goaltender Charles Williams.
"They're a good team and they showed their bounce back from last night," said head coach Mel Pearson. "Having said that, there are moments in a game that can turn things around. I didn't like our penalties, and a couple plays in the second period didn't go our way."
Ferris opened scoring with a four-on-three power play goal. Justin Buzzeo took a one-timer from the right circle. Jamie Phillips made the save, but the rebound came to the back door to Andy Huff who tapped it in.
C.J. Eick and Malcolm Gould worked a 2-on-1 early in the second period for a great scoring chance to make it 1-all. Gould's shot hit a pipe and bounced straight back out. The goal horn sounded, but was no goal after a video review.
Midway through the second period, Dakota Klecha picked David Johnstone's pocket and skated in alone on Phillips. He finished with a backhand for a 2-0 lead.
Tech had three power plays in the third period to try to get back into the game, but instead it was FSU extending the margin. Jared VanWormer was the recipient of a bounce off a teammate's skate to his stick in the slot where he scored.
"Ferris played a good road game," said Pearson. "They defended well and capitalized on their scoring chances.
"We took a lot of unnecessary penalties, especially from our top players."
Tanner Kero, Alex Petan, Blake Pietila and David Johnstone all spent time in the penalty box as Tech was whistled for seven infractions. FSU committed 10 penalties. The Huskies were 0-for-7 on the man advantage compared to 1-for-5 by the Bulldogs.
Phillips finished with 22 saves in his fifth consecutive start in net. Williams made 25 saves to gain his first career shutout.
Petan led the Huskies with four shots on goal. Ryan Furne had three including a good scoring chance in the second period.
Michigan Tech will continue WCHA play next week with a trip to Bowling Green State. Games are Friday (Jan. 31) and Saturday (Feb. 1) at 7:07 p.m. each night.
