Tech Men’s Basketball Slips Up at Wayne State

DETROIT, Mich. – The Michigan Tech men's basketball team saw its three-game win streak snapped by Wayne State in a 75-61 setback at the Wayne State Fieldhouse on Thursday evening.

"We weren't ready to play–I thought we had pretty good energy and then we didn't guard anyone," head coach Josh Buettner said. "Second half I thought we guarded better and started competing on defense and it got better in the second half, but they felt like they could get to the rim at will against us and they pretty much did."

Michigan Tech (9-15, 6-9) was playing from behind from the opening moments as Wayne State (11-14, 5-11) connected on its first shot of the day, a 3-pointer by Ray Williams Jr. and continued to pull away as the game went on.

With less than six minutes played, the Warriors jumped out to a 15-5 lead and sustained a double-digit lead through halftime, leading 42-29.

MTU did a better job defensively in the second half, being outscored by just a point (33-32), but would never cut the deficit to single digits.

Marcus Tomashek scored 17 second half points with a turnaround jumper at the 10:22 mark, cutting the Warriors lead to 13 points, the closest the Huskies would get in the second half.

Dawson Nordgaard scored in double-figures for the first time in three games with 10 points. Brad Simonsen scored nine points on three-for-5 shooting off the bench in 14 minutes.

Tomashek scored 21 points, while Pete Calcaterra grabbed five rebounds to lead the team.

Rob Lee Jr. led four Warriors in double-figure scoring with 21 points and a team-high 12 rebounds.
