Volleyball Beats Saginaw Valley State, 3-1

SAGINAW, Mich. – Lauren Emmert had 20 kills and four Huskies finished with double-digit digs as the Michigan Tech volleyball team stormed to a 3-1 win over Saginaw Valley State tonight (Nov. 6) in a GLIAC conference match at Cardinal Gym.

The victory was the first for Michigan Tech in Saginaw since 2006.

"Going into the match we knew it would be a slugfest," said Tech head coach Matt Jennings. "Our defense stepped up to the challenge and delivered. Our back row was relentless and our blocking was as disciplined as it's been all year.

"I was most impressed with the team's mental toughness tonight. We made big plays at big points and it was great to see considering we had dropped three straight coming into the match."

Tech won the first set by a 25-21 score. The Huskies carried the play and led throughout the frame before Emmert clinched the win with a kill.

After SVSU earned a victory in the second stanza, the Black and Gold rallied and took the third and fourth sets by scores of 25-23 and 25-21, respectively.

Aubrey Ficek and Mariah Sherman combined for 18 kills to help the offensive charge, while Jacqueline Aird (20), Halie Hart (18), Rachel Pohlod (15) and Elle Heinonen (12) were sound defensively to help the Huskies hold the Cardinals to just a .078 hitting percentage on the night.

Michigan Tech (18-9 overall; 9-6 GLIAC) will be in Detroit tomorrow (Nov. 7) to play Wayne State at 4 p.m.
