Tech Volleyball Loses Tight Match to Northern Michigan

HOUGHTON, Mich. – Lauren Emmert had 13 kills and hit .423 while Jacqueline Aird posted 26 digs, but the Michigan Tech volleyball team was knocked off by longtime rival Northern Michigan, 3-1, tonight (Nov. 3) at the SDC Gym.

The match marked the final regular season home outing for four Tech seniors, who were each honored in a post-match ceremony. The Huskies finish their 2015 home schedule with a 5-4 record.

"We started well and I thought we executed until halfway through the second set," said head coach Matt Jennings. "We made some mistakes at key moments and that prevented us from getting and playing to our strengths.

"That being said, this program owes a lot to our four seniors and honoring them in front of our amazing fans, students and community is something special. I can't say enough about their accomplishments as a group."

The Huskies opened the match well and stormed to a 25-18 win in the first set. Noelle Eveland and Aubrey Ficek both notched five kills in the stanza and the Black and Gold hit .314 as a team to build a lead as big as 10 points midway through the frame.

Sets No. 2 and 3 went both back-and-forth affairs with neither team taking control until late in the sets. Northern Michigan managed to close out wins of 25-20 and 25-21, respectively, to capture a 2-1 overall edge.

The Wildcats clinched the victory with a 25-18 win in the fourth set.

Ficek was the only other Tech player to record double-digit kills (10). Setter Rachel Pohlod tallied 38 assists in the match and added 10 digs. Halie Hart played a big part in the defensive effort and was credited with nine digs while three other players – Eveland, Elle Heinonen and Sarah Rasmussen – had five digs apiece.

Michigan Tech (17-9 overall; 8-6 GLIAC) closes its regular-season schedule with a four-match road swing, which begins this weekend (Nov. 6-7). The Huskies play Saginaw Valley State Friday before traveling to Detroit to play Wayne State Saturday.
