Volleyball Huskies Sweep Lake Superior State, Tie Best Start in School History Play Video

HOUGHTON, Mich. - Mariah Sherman recorded 11 kills and Jacqueline Aird had 15 digs to help lead the Michigan Tech volleyball team to a 3-0 victory over Lake Superior State Friday (Sept. 18) at the SDC Gym. The Huskies improved to 9-0 with the win, tying the 1994 team for the best start in program history.

The offensive attack was led by Sherman, who hit .400, along with Lauren Emmert (nine kills), Stephanie Dietrich and Aubrey Ficek (seven kills each). Sarah Rasmussen and Elle Heinonen collected six and five digs, respectively.

"I thought for the most part we controlled the outcome of each play and each point," said head coach Matt Jennings. "Our offense was clicking at a pretty high level and we did a good job of bouncing back. I thought each time they were about to make a move we came in and really shut them down."

The Huskies started fast in the opening set and built an 11-4 lead before cruising to a 25-13 win. Aird notched four digs in the set, while Dietrich and Sherman both had three kills to help the Black and Gold hit .364 as a group.

Michigan Tech continued its solid play early in the middle set, working its way to a 16-7 advantage en route to a 25-20 victory. The team registered a game-high 15 kills as a unit in the middle frame, including Ficek's finisher from the left side.

The Black and Gold completed the three-set sweep by taking the final set 25-17. The Huskies won eight of the final 10 points, and Emmert had back-to-back kills to clinch the win.

Michigan Tech (9-0 overall, 1-0 GLIAC) returns to action tomorrow (Sept. 19) when it hosts Northwood University at 3 p.m.
