Volleyball Huskies Finish Opening Weekend 4-0

MARQUETTE, Mich. — Michigan Tech wrapped up a 4-0 weekend with a pair of 3-0 wins today. The Huskies knocked off Lake Superior State in a morning match before sweeping Cedarville tonight.

Tech won 12 sets and lost none in going 4-0 to start the 2015 season.

"I'm really happy for the team," said Tech coach Matt Jennings. "We not only won all four matches, but played really good team volleyball. We took control of each set and played with confidence.

"We haven't had this type of effort and performance since I started coaching here. The team's in a really good place right now."

Huskies 3, Lake Superior State 0

Tech held off a late rally from the Lakers to win the opening set 25-23. Mariah Sherman had four kills in the opening nine points of set two en route to a 25-13. Jacqueline Aird served eight straight points in set three to break a 17-all tie for a 25-17 set win.

Aubrey Ficek had a match-high 10 kills. Sherman added nine kills on just 12 attempts. Aird notched 15 digs and three service aces.

Huskies 3, Cedarville 0

The Black and Gold battled back from a 16-12 deficit in the opening set to win it 25-23 on Stephanie Dietrich's kill. Tech hit .615 as a team in the opening frame. Set two went to the Huskies 25-17 after three straight points to end the frame. Cedarville was up 23-21 in the third set before Tech rattled off four straight points. A service ace by Rachel Pohlod and a block ended the match.

Dietrich hit an incredible .900 in the match with nine kills and no errors on 10 attempts. Sherman and Ficek each added 10 kills apiece. The Huskies hit .430 as a team compared to .259 for Cedarville.

Michigan Tech will return to action next weekend with four matches Sept. 10-12 at the Upper Iowa invitational.
