Huskies Volleyball Sweeps Weekend

MIDLAND, Mich. – The opening weekend of GLIAC play was good to the Michigan Tech volleyball team. After a sweep of Lake Superior State on Friday, the Huskies dominated Northwood 3-0 on Saturday (Sept. 13). Tech is now 3-4 overall and 2-0 in the GLIAC.

The visiting Huskies dominated the first two sets (25-15, 25-20) before squeaking out the win in extra points in the third (28-26).

"Getting these two wins gives us a lot of confidence," Tech coach Matt Jennings said. "We know that we're a pretty good team and that we have the tools to get it done. We just need to keep improving every day."

Tied at 12 in the first, Tech set outside to Aubrey Ficek who had three kills to put the Huskies in the drivers seat. She then served on four straight Husky points, and Sylvie Rokosh sealed the deal with two kills.

In the second set, Ficek served four straight points to put Tech up 19-16. This time Lauren Emmert put down the final point for a 2-0 lead heading into the break.

The two teams went to extras in the third set. The Timberwolves had set point twice but weren't able to capitalize. Tied a 26, Ficek had a kill and a service ace to give Tech the sweep.

"We were aggressive offensively all weekend," added Jennings. "Our middles were so good, and Sylvie was dominant."

Rokosh finished with a match-high 13 kills. Ficek had 10 kills and four aces. Emmert recorded six kills and six block assists. Rosie Aumann setup the attack with 37 assists. Jacqueline Aird tallied nine digs.

Allison Getty and Meghan Cleary each had eight kills to lead Northwood. Jaclyn Klimmet and Hailey Jones each tallied 14 assists.

The Huskies continue GLIAC play on the road next weekend with a trip to Ohio to take on Ashland (Sept. 19) and Lake Erie (Sept. 20).
