Huskies handle Bulldogs on Senior Day 5-2

HOUGHTON, Mich. – No. 44 Michigan Tech women's tennis assembled a win on Senior Day, defeating Ferris State 5-2 at Gates Tennis Center Saturday to close the regular season. Neva Manas was effective in singles and doubles for the Huskies (8-6, 5-2), who head into the GLIAC quarterfinals next week.

Manas and Ewa Podulka played an excellent set at No. 3 doubles, punctuated by a long baseline exchange in the latter stage and ending in a Manas winner up the line. The duo defeated Morgan Waller and Ana Hernandez 6-1.

At No. 1, the Huskies used a pair of double faults and a volley error to grab a break of serve for a 4-3 lead. Grace Eland served out the set 6-4 to clinch the team doubles point. It was the second straight win over a top-20 ranked doubles opponent for Eland and Bobik.

Bobik converted a break point at 30-40 in the final game to steal her first set 6-4, but Sophie Daavettila overcame the deficit to win at No. 1 singles 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Grace Eland moved to 7-5 this spring at No. 2 singles with a straight-set win over Waller 6-0, 6-4.

Manas edged Parker Nolan at No. 4 in a pair of tiebreakers, completing a comeback 2-6, 7-6(5), 7-6(4). Fellow senior Lauren Opalewski won her final match in Houghton in convincing fashion at No. 6 over Kennedy Dumas 6-3, 6-2.

"Taking the doubles point really set us up for success today," said head coach Kristin D'Agostini-Yep. "I was really happy with our effort, especially in close singles matches. Hopefully, we can take this positive momentum into the tournament next week."

The GLIAC quarterfinals are scheduled for April 21 at Greater Midland Tennis Center. Michigan Tech was ranked No. 6 in the NCAA Midwest Region rankings heading into the week.

Should the Huskies qualify for the NCAA Midwest Region Tournament (selection show April 24 – 8:30 p.m.), it would be the first appearance for the program since 2007-08.
