Huskies sneak past Panthers 4-3
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Michigan Tech snuck past Davenport University 4-3 in women's tennis to improve to 2-0 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play Friday at Grand Rapids Racquet and Fitness Club.
The Panthers (10-7, 1-1) collected the team doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2. Lauren Opalewski and Emily Cojocaru lost their first doubles set of the season at No. 2 in a tiebreaker 7-6(1) to Skye Vandeleur and Hermon Mikeal.
The Huskies made up ground in singles with Cojocaru winning in straight sets over Mikael 6-3, 6-0. Dominika Bobik was next to finish and she improved to 5-3 at No. 1 after taking care of Amy Bloch 6-4, 6-4.
Grace Eland edged Willemien Coetzee in a first-set tiebreaker 7-5, then took the second 6-4. Lauren Opalewski grabbed a third-set win over Louise Hosking at No. 6 to break the 3-3 match tie.
"We had hard-fought matches all around today and some really good close results," commented head coach Kristin D'Agostini-Yep. "High performance on critical points was there and it came right down to the end. I was happy we were able to squeak it out."
The Huskies (5-4, 2-0) already tout two more wins than last spring with five matches still to play. Tech takes on Purdue Northwest (7-6, 2-0) Saturday at 1 p.m. at Forest Park Tennis Club.
