Timberwolves upend Huskies 4-1 in Quarterfinals

MIDLAND, Mich. - No. 5 seed Michigan Tech women's tennis fell 4-1 to No. 4 seed Northwood in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference quarterfinals Friday afternoon at Greater Midland Tennis Center. The Timberwolves wasted little time taking the team doubles point with a 6-1 set at No. 1 and 6-4 set at No. 3. In singles, senior Mirna Golac (MTU) took down Anna Goncharova (NU) 6-0, 6-2 but Northwood handled the Huskies at No. 1, No. 2, and No. 4 to clinch the match. Ivona Gorgioski retired after three games in the first set against Amanda Bandrowski. Dominika Bobik forced a third set at No. 2 but lost 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 to Elizaveta Velichko. Neva Manas also took a set from Rafaella Fulop at No. 4 but fell 2-6, 6-2, 7-5.

"We gave it our all today and just came up short," said head coach Kristin Yep. "When Northwood clinched, we had two other matches in third sets. It was just a few big points that didn't go our way but I was proud of our effort today."

The chance to play for a GLIAC Championship has been erased this spring with the loss, but the Huskies will play again Saturday at 2:30 EST in consolation against Saginaw Valley State. The Cardinals came up short against top seed Ferris State 4-0 Friday.
