HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech women's tennis team opens the 2019-20 season Saturday at Lake Superior State University. The Huskies were scheduled to begin the campaign last week in a non-conference match at Lawrence Tech, but the contest was postponed after two rain delays stopped play.

The Huskies finished the 2018-19 season with an overall record of 10-7 and wrapped up the year with a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference record of 7-2 during the fall portion of the schedule. The Huskies rose into the top 50 of the ITA rankings this past spring and they hope the momentum and experience of last season will be a spring board for 2019-20.

Tech brings back a number of key returners and Head Coach Kevin Kalinec added four talented freshmen to the roster for this season. Junior Ivona Gorgioski went 12-4 last year overall and 7-2 in the GLIAC on her way to earning First Team All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honors.

Sophomore Jessica Brown led the team with 15 overall singles wins and also had seven victories in GLIAC contests. Sophomore Samantha Johnson and senior Anabella Neri each picked up 11 overall singles victories a year ago and sophomore Mirna Golac collected 10 wins in singles play as a freshman. Joining the Huskies for 2019-20 as freshman are Bhavya Aggarwal, Dominika Bobik, Neva Manas, and Lauren Opalewski.

Lake Superior State has yet to take the court this fall so Saturday's battle with the Huskies will be the first for the Lakers in 2019-20 as well. Lake Superior State wrapped up 2018-19 with an 8-9 overall record and a 4-5 mark in the GLIAC. The Huskies swept the season series against the Lakers last year, with Tech recording 7-0 and 4-0 victories. The 7-0 triumph was a regular season contest in Houghton while the 4-0 win took place in the GLIAC Tournament Quarterfinals.

Saturday's first serve in Sault Ste Marie is scheduled for 10 a.m. eastern time.
