Huskies Sign Manas and Opalewski for 2019-20 Season

HOUGHTON, Mich. – Michigan Tech Head Coach Kevin Kalinec and the women's tennis program are pleased to announce the additions of Apurva Manas and Lauren Opalewski to the 2019-20 recruiting class. Manas and Opalewski each signed National Letters of Intent this week to further their academic and tennis careers as Huskies.

"I'm really excited to add Apurva and Lauren to our program," Head Coach Kevin Kalinec said. "Both players are very strong academically and will continue the athletic and academic success our team has had, but will also benefit from the strong leadership and maturity of our current players."

Manas is from Carmel, Indiana and currently competes at Carmel High School. Manas is 18-0 in singles and 26-1 in doubles and was named Second Team All-State in both the 2017 and 2018 seasons. She also helped guide her team to State Championships in back-to-back years (2017 and 2018). Quote from Coach Kalinec: "Apurva is an excellent defensive player and moves very well. She does a very good job of playing neutral balls until the right opportunity to attack. Apurva will likely compete for a spot in the middle of the lineup."

Opalewski is from Oxford, Michigan and competed at Oxford High School where she helped lead the team to league championships during her freshman and sophomore seasons. During her junior and senior seasons, Opalewski was a member of the boys' team where she compiled an overall record of 27-7 in No. 1 singles competition. Opalewski's four-year record in singles matches stands at 55-12.

Opalewski has been recognized for her performance on the court with All-State, All-League, and MVP honors during her four-year prep career. Quote from Coach Kalinec: "Lauren has a very solid all-around game and a big serve. I'm impressed with her instinct in doubles and her focus on the right areas of the court during a doubles point. I expect her to contribute in both doubles and singles right away."

The Huskies are currently 9-4 on the season and will be back on the court for the spring season beginning in late February when they take on Tiffin at the Lakewood Racquet Club in Lexington, Ohio on the 22nd. Tech will travel to Hillsdale the next day before battling UW-Green Bay on the road March 3rd. The Huskies then travel south for the annual Spring Tennis Fest in Hilton Head, S.C March 8-16.
