Huskies Claim First Tennis Win of 2015-16

ASHLAND, Ohio — Michigan Tech picked up its first women's tennis win of the season with a 5-4 decision at Ashland today. Allenca Rolim secured the final team point for the Huskies, who improved to 1-3 on the year.

Tech found itself down 2-1 after doubles. The Huskies' top duo of Vicky Quinde and Sandra Cvetanovic swept their opponent 8-0. Ashland won the other two flights by 8-5 scores.

The Black and Gold needed to win four of the six singles flights, and that's exactly what they did. The Huskies won each of the top three flights. Quinde was a 6-4, 5-7, 6-0 winner at No. 1; Cvetanovic triumphed 7-6, 6-4 at No. 2, and Emilia Tenizbaeva claimed a 7-5, 7-5 victory at No. 3.

The Eagles won at No. 4 singles in three sets and at No. 6 in straight sets.

That left Rolim on the court for the deciding point. The freshman defeated an AU senior, Kendal Stephens, by a 7-6, 6-1 count for the team victory.

"We came out flat in doubles, but were able start quickly in singles," said Tech coach Kevin Kalinec. "Winning the first three singles matches definitely gave us momentum, and Allenca played a smart match to finish it off."

Michigan Tech will be back in action next weekend (Sept. 19-20) at Northwood and Saginaw Valley State.
