Tennis Defeated by Grand Valley 8-1 in Opener

HOUGHTON, Mich. — Grand Valley State defeated Michigan Tech in women's tennis today at Gates Tennis Center in both teams' season opener.

The Huskies earned their lone win at No. 2 doubles, where Emilia Tenizbaeva and Allenca Rolim claimed an 8-6 victory.

The Lakers won 8-0 and 8-3 at Nos. 1 and 3, respectively. GVSU also won in straight sets at all six singles flights. Vicky Quinde made her collegiate debut at No. 1 singles for the Huskies, falling 6-2, 6-3.

Kwang Suthijindawong, Tech's reigning GLIAC Player of the Year, did not play and will likely miss the entire season with injury.

"We had a lot of nerves today," said Tech coach Kevin Kalinec. "We've practiced really well in doubles all week, but didn't come out and play that well. I thought we could have won all three doubles flights, which would have given us some momentum heading into singles."

Michigan Tech remains at home for another match tomorrow. Ferris State comes to Gates Tennis Center for a 10 a.m. first serve.
