Soccer Announces 2021-22 Team Awards

HOUGHTON, Mich. - Michigan Tech soccer head coach Turk Ozturk has announced nine team award winners for the 2021-22 fall season. Grace Shaw was named team most valuable player. The Huskies finished the season 12-7 overall, including 9-5 in the GLIAC.

Shaw, a senior forward from Green Bay, Wisconsin earned second team All-GLIAC honors for the second consecutive season and third time in her career. She led the Huskies with 11 goals, 24 points, and seven game-winning goals. She finished fourth in the GLIAC in goals and tied for first in game-winning goals. 

Offensive most valuable player was awarded to Stephanie Yeager, a senior midfielder from New Boston, Michigan. Yeager finished third on the team with five goals and led the squad with eight assists. She posted 18 points and was one of the GLIAC's top threats on corner kicks. She also had three game-winning goals and was second team All-GLIAC.

Sophomore defender Molly Bolang (Pinckney, Michigan) was named defensive most valuable player. She was a critical component on the Husky back line. She started every game and helped the team record 10 shutouts during their 2021-22 campaign. She was also named second team All-GLIAC.

Senior goalkeeper Erika Gabriel (Grandville, Michigan) was goalkeeper of the year and second team All-GLIAC. She appeared in 13 games with 12 starts and posted six shutouts with six goals against (second in the conference). Her 0.58 goals against average was also second best in the GLIAC and her .829 save percentage was good for fourth highest.

Senior defender Alicia Shatrau earned the team's sportsmanship award. Shatrau (Brighton, Michigan) started all but one game for the Huskies and recorded an assist in a 2-1 victory over Wisconsin Parkside on October 10. She was also honorable mention All-GLIAC.

Tate Robison and Gabby Sgambati were both scholar athlete award winners. Both are juniors from Farmington Hills, Michigan and both are majoring in Mechanical Engineering at Tech.

Senior midfielder Hannah Loughlin (Mahtomedi, Minnesota) earned most improved player this season. In 2020-21 she appeared in 10 games with one start and one assist. This fall, she started 12 games and had two points with 16 shots on goal.

Newcomer of the year went to freshman forward Julia Pietila (Hartland, Michigan). Pietila started 15 games in her debut season and recorded 15 points. Her breakout game came on September 12, when she scored four goals at Minnesota Crookston and one assist for nine points. She scored her first goal of the season on September 10 at Bemidji State.

The Huskies played a scrimmage in Marquette last week and begin the 2022-23 regular season on August 25 at Minnesota Duluth.
