HOUGHTON, Mich. — The Michigan Tech women's soccer team wrapped up its 2015 home schedule with a 2-1 win over Saginaw Valley State today. It was Senior Day for five Huskies student-athletes, and they ended their time at Sherman Field with a victory and a 4-1 home record in 2015.

Tech opened scoring less than seven minutes into the game when Jacqueline Mielke blasted a left-footed shot from 25 yards away over the goalkeeper. It was her ninth goal of the season.

The Huskies (9-5-1, 6-4-1 GLIAC) sustained pressure the entire first half with the wind at their backs. Lexi Herrewig added to the lead with a corner kick in the 30th minute. She bent her shot to hit the crossbar and drop into the goal for her team-leading 12th marker of the campaign.

Tech posted a 12-2 advantage in shots in the opening 45 minutes.

Saginaw Valley (5-10-0, 3-8-0 GLIAC) used the wind to its advantage and became the aggressor in the second half. The Cardinals posted a 9-3 advantage in shots. Senior goalkeeper Jenna Phelps made four saves for the Black and Gold in the half, but could not stop SVSU's lone goal—a penalty kick in the 71st minute.

Michigan Tech did create a couple good chances in the second half; none was better than Marisa DeMario's shot in the 74th minute from the top of the box that sailed just wide.

"We played a beautiful first half," said Tech coach Michelle Jacob. "We possessed the ball and tackled well. The second half was a battle, but we got the job done."

Herrewig, Phelps and three other seniors—Haley Crites, Janelle Riedl and Korinne Umlauft—were all honored prior to the game.

"They're all wonderful people," said Jacob of the seniors. "Their leadership and dedication has helped this program get to where it is, and I'm happy to have been a part of their lives."

Michigan Tech will wrap up its 2015 regular season schedule at Northern Michigan next Saturday (Oct. 31). Game time is 12 noon.
