HOUGHTON, Mich. – Lexi Herrewig and Jacqueline Mielke both scored to carry the Michigan Tech women's soccer team to a 2-0 win against Malone University in a GLIAC conference showdown today (Oct. 4) at Sherman Field.

Tech controlled the first half and outshot the Pioneers 15-1 before Herrewig put the Huskies on the board in the 43rd minute. AfterJenelle Riedl beat a defender at the right edge of the box, she crossed it to Herrewig who knocked the ball past the Malonegoalkeeper for a 1-0 Tech lead.

The Black and Gold outshot Malone 24-4 in the contest. Tech goalkeeper Jenna Phelps finished with two saves to earn the shutout.

"The girls did a nice job of possessing the ball and we created a ton of shots and scoring opportunities," said head coach Michelle Jacob. "It's hard not to be happy with the effort. It's important for us to play both sides of the ball and I thought we did a nice job of that today. It was a great team effort, both offensively and defensively."

The Huskies (6-3 overall; 3-2 GLIAC) begin a four-game road swing next weekend. Tech plays Tiffin Friday (Oct. 9) before closing out the weekend Sunday (Oct. 11) vs. Findlay.
