HOUGHTON, Mich. - Michigan Tech women's basketball brings a four-game win streak into the GLIAC Quarterfinals Wednesday as they host Wayne State at 5:30 p.m. EST. The Huskies remained undefeated (13-0) at SDC Gymnasium Saturday with an 80-68 win over Northern Michigan. Fans can stream the game on FloSports or listen live to Mix 93.5 FM WKMJ. 

  • The Huskies have made the postseason all five seasons under head coach Sam Clayton and have not missed the conference tournament since 1989-80.
  • Tech has 20 NCAA Appearances.
  • Their last trip was in 2020-21 (midwest region semifinalist).
  • Tech's impressive home winning streak extends into last season and stands at 16 in a row (last loss: Jan. 27, 2022 vs. Northwood).

WHERE THE HUSKIES EXCEL

  • Isabella Lenz leads the team and ranks 11th in the GLIAC in scoring at 14.0 points per game.
  • The Prescott, Wisconsin native was named GLIAC Freshman of the Year last spring.
  • Forward Sara Dax leads the GLIAC in shooting percentage (53.8) while Katelyn Meister ranks third in the category, shooting 52.8 percent overall.
  • Alex Rondorf averaged nearly a double-double per game early in the fall and still ranks fifth in the conference in rebounds per game (7.9).
  • The Huskies average 70.7 points (4th) and allow 59.8 points to opponents (3rd).
  • MTU is the most responsible team in the league with the basketball and ranks ninth nationally in fewest turnovers per game (12.6).
  • The Huskies are also third in Division II free throw percentage (80.21), behind only Belmont Abbey (81.60) and Cedarville (83.81). 

MATCHUP WITH THE WARRIORS

  • Wayne State comes to Houghton fresh off a road win over Purdue Northwest Saturday 68-54.
  • Redshirt senior Maxine Moore led WSU with 20 points on 10-12 shooting with seven rebounds.
  • Senior Shea Tripp and graduate student Sophia Karasinski chipped in 10 points apiece.
  • Michigan Tech defeated Wayne State 80-70 at SDC Gymnasium on February 2 and overcame a nine-point halftime deficit.
  • Dax scored 22 points. Moore posted 20 points for the Warriors and leading scorer Becca Fugate added 19.
  • The Huskies have won six straight games in the matchup, with their last loss in February 2018.
  • Wayne State was projected to finish sixth in this year's GLIAC Preseason Coaches Poll.

CHASING HISTORY

  • After surpassing the Michigan Tech all-time career games played record (131), Mackay continues to climb the charts. Her 1,818 career points ranks third behind Katie Wysocky (1,943) and Jenny Postlewaite (1,856).
  • This season, Mackay is averaging 13.4 points per game and 3.8 rebounds.
  • The fifth-year senior holds an 87.3 percent career free throw percentage, on pace to surpass Mary Fisher’s (1983-87) MTU record 85.3 percent with 250 makes on 293 tries at the line (minimum 200 attempts).
  • Mackay already holds the single season record for free throw percentage (92.4), though Rondorf is currently on pace to usurp her for the top spot, having converted 49 of 51 attempts this winter. 

SCOUTING THE WARRIORS (14-12, 7-11)

  • Head Coach Carrie Lohr is in her 12th season at the helm of the program. She is the all-time leader in Wayne State coaching victories.
  • The Warriors qualified for the NCAA Tournament in 2021-22 after falling in the GLIAC Semifinals.
  • Senior guard Becca Fugate (Holly, Michigan) leads the team in points (13.8 ppg) and rebounds (6.4 rpg). She is a strong outside shooter with 37 triples in 2021-22 and 43 this winter.
  • Last season, Fugate started 20 of 28 games and posted 7.8 points per game along with 51 assists.
  • Sophomore forward Shea Tripp (Jackson, Michigan) played 24 games as a true freshman with eight starts. She leads the Warriors in assists, blocks, and steals. 
  • WSU features six newcomers, including a pair of transfer students.

FUN FACT

  • Michigan Tech and Wayne State's last postseason matchup was March 7, 2008 in the GLIAC Semifinals. Michigan Tech won the game 83-62. All-time leading scorer Katie Wysocky led the Huskies with 18 points.
  • Last year, the Huskies also hosted the GLIAC Quarterfinals as the No. 4 seed. Tech defeated No. 5 seed Northwood 87-77 in overtime.
  • Saturday's 1,001 attendance figure was the highest so far this season at SDC Gymnasium.

THE ROAD TO THE FINAL FOUR

  • The NCAA Division II women's basketball championship selection show is set for Sunday, March 5 at 10:30 p.m. EST on NCAA.com.
  • Before the selection, the committee sits down to fill out the 64-team bracket, 23 conference champions will earn an automatic bid to this year's tournament.
  • Eight regionals commence on March 10 to determine this season's DII Elite Eight.
  • Those final eight teams will head to the St. Joseph Civic Center in St. Joseph, Mo., from March 20-22 to decide which two teams head to Dallas, Texas to play in the DII National Championship game on April 1.
  • Michigan Tech has made 20 NCAA Regional appearances, once under head coach Sam Clayton, and most recently in 2020-21.
  • The Huskies were a regional semifinalist and fell 74-65 to Ashland University at O'Reilly Event Center in Springfield, Missouri (Drury University).
  • Tech's best run since the program's inception in 1975-76 occurred under head coach Kim Cameron in 2010-11.
  • The Huskies finished 31-3 overall, and placed first in the GLIAC North Division and GLIAC Tournament, before making a run to the NCAA Division II title game, where they fell to Clayton State 69-50 at Civic Arena (St. Joseph's, Missouri).
  • Sam Clayton was a sophomore at the time and a Division II All-American Honorable Mention selection.
