Huskies hold off Warriors 86-71

DETROIT – Five players reached double figures and Michigan Tech women's basketball secured its fifth straight conference matchup 86-72 Saturday afternoon over Wayne State at Wayne State Fieldhouse. 

Isabella Lenz paced the offense with 18 points, including 8-8 from the free throw line to help the Huskies improve to 13-3 overall, 5-1 in the GLIAC. Lenz also added six assists, four rebounds, three steals, and two blocks, marking her 13th game of 10 or more points this season.

Ellie Mackay contributed 13 points and Sloane Zenner finished with 11. Sara Dax was efficient in the lane with 10 points (5-9) and Soraya Timms pitched in 10 points in 23 minutes off the bench.The Huskies won their fifth straight meeting with Wayne State (8-5, 1-4 GLIAC) and are 3-1 on their current five game road trip.

"I was very happy with our 20 to seven assist to turnover ratio this afternoon," said head coach Sam Clayton. "We had a lot of players make positive contributions and we continue to make steps in the right direction. It's great to see Bella have another great game in all facets. She really deserves a lot of credit for what she brings to our team in terms of leadership on and off the court.

Similar to Thursday night's win over Saginaw Valley State, the Huskies jumped out to an early lead and shot 47-percent in the first quarter for a 20-10 margin. Meanwhile, Wayne State shot just 27-percent in the opening ten minutes.

Lenz reached 12 points prior to halftime as MTU took a 44-27 advantage into the locker room. Becca Fugate willed the Warriors to more offense in the second half and finished with 24 points on 8 of 15 shooting. Fugate also nabbed 11 rebounds for a double-double but the Huskies continued to score inside and out and limited turnovers to seven to pull away.

Katelyn Meister came off the bench to score seven points and Emma Anderson posted five points against her former squad.

Michigan Tech (13-3, 5-1) travels to Marquette next week to face Northern Michigan (10-5, 5-1) on Saturday, January 14 at 3 p.m. Fans can catch the action on Mix 93.5 FM WKMJ.
