MARQUETTE, Mich. — Bre Gaspervich scored a layup with four seconds left, and Danielle Blake's shot at the buzzer fell short, giving Northern Michigan a 71-69 victory over Michigan Tech at the Berry Events Center tonight.

The teams battled in a close one throughout the second half with neither team leading by more than four. Mackenzie Perttu gave Tech its only lead (67-66) of the fourth quarter with a free throw at the 1:34 mark.

NMU answered with a three-point play on the other end to grab a 69-67 advantage. Kylie Moxley then knotted the game at 69-all with 6.3 seconds remaining, and the Wildcats called timeout to advance the ball to midcourt.

Gaspervich got free for a quick layup, and the Huskies couldn't answer at the horn.

"Our defense was not good enough," said Tech coach Kim Cameron. "We let them do whatever they wanted. We just didn't have the toughness that it was going to take to win today."

Northern Michigan shot 58 percent from the floor in the second half and 53 percent for the game. The Wildcats also held a 28-24 rebounding advantage.

Tech shot 47 percent from the field and made 21-of-25 free throws, but only made two 3-pointers on five attempts.

Moxley finished with a game- and career-high 27 points, making 12-of-20 field goals and both of her foul shots. Danielle Blake added 19 points and six rebounds. Elizabeth Kelliher totaled 10 points.

NMU had four players in double figures.

Tech will continue its stretch of five games in 10 days with two home games this week. The first is Thursday (Feb. 4) vs. Ferris State. Tipoff at the SDC Gym is set for 5:30 p.m.
