Tech Ski Teams Finish Second in Day One of CCSA Invite

HOUGHTON, Mich. — Michigan Tech wrapped up day one of the Central Collegiate Ski Association Invitational at the Michigan Tech Nordic Training Center today with both teams finishing second. Today's discipline was freestyle.

The women's team finished second among six teams thanks to three top-11 finishers. Andrea Lee completed the course in 15:15 for seventh place. Sonja Hedblom placed 10th in 15:39, and Carolyn Lucca was one spot back in 15:59.

Tech's men were led by Gaspard Cuenot, who skied a time of 26:36 to finished fourth. Kyle Hanson placed eighth in a time of 27:53. Daniel Wood and Didrik Fjeld Elset finished in 16th and 17th positions with times of 28:47 and 28:51, respectively.

"We had great conditions for skiing today with clear skies and temperatures in the 30s," said Tech coach Joe Haggenmiller. "Northern Michigan was dominant today, but if you take them out of the equation I thought we fared well.

"Gaspard moved a little closer to the top guys today, and it was good to see Carolyn have maybe a breakthrough race."

Michigan Tech will host day two of the CCSA Invitational with classic races tomorrow.
