Michigan Tech Ski Teams 2nd at CCSA Relay

DULUTH, Minn. — The Michigan Tech Nordic skiing teams both finished second at the Central Collegiate Ski Association Sprint & Relay Championships today.
The teams both placed behind St. Scholastica in the freestyle distance relays.
The Huskies' top men's team of Kyle Hanson, Sam Holmes and Haakon Hjelstuen turned in a combined time of 1:06:08 over the 30 kilometers. Each skier raced 10K. Hanson posted a 22:38, Holmes a 22:35 and Hjelstuen a 20:54. Tech finished less than a minute behind St. Scholastica's 1:05:13.
The women's race featured six-kilometer legs. Tech's trio of Ulrika Axelsson, Lisa Konig and Alice Flanders posted a time of 49:53 over 18K. They were 51 seconds behind CSS. Axelsson had a time of 17:18. Konig was at 17:01. Flanders closed in 15:33.
"I thought we had a chance to win both races today, but it didn't work out for us," said Tech coach Joe Haggenmiller. "The effort was there, but we just didn't have our best day."
The weekend of racing at Duluth will conclude with sprint races tomorrow (Feb. 8). The results of this weekend and next will count toward the CCSA team titles.
Michigan Tech will compete at the CCSA Distance Championships next weekend in Minneapolis.
