Yovetich Wins First Race of Career
MARQUETTE, Mich. - Marissa Yovetich won the first race of her
career to lead the Michigan Tech cross country teams at the Upper
Peninsula Championships in Marquette, Mich. Friday (Oct. 7).
Yovetich completed the six-kilometer course in 23:15.
"Marissa has been working really hard all season, and her win
confirms that," said head coach Joe Haggenmiller.
Deedra Irwin finished second (23:32) and Christina Mishica finished
third (23:43) to complete the podium sweep for the Huskies.
Tech placed two more runners in the top-10 to complete its team
score of 21. Amanda Halonen crossed the line in seventh (24:12),
and Sarah Daniels was one spot behind in eighth (24:24).
Tech won the team competition (21 points) ahead of Northern
Michigan (36 points) and Lake Superior State (79).
In the eight kilometer men's race, Taylor Heath (26:44) and Mark
List (26:50) claimed the first two spots for Lake Superior State,
but Tech followed in the next seven.
Jani Lane edged out a pair of teammates for third place. Lane
finished the eight-kilometer course in 28:04 followed by Matt Dugan
in fourth (28:06) and Eric Parsell in fifth (28:08).
Calvin Nitz finished sixth (28:14) and Nathan Manderfield was
seventh (28:14) to complete the top-five for Tech.
Tech scored 25 points to claim the team title over Lake Superior
State (36 points) and Gogebic (82 points).
