Men's Tennis Starts Season with Weekend Split

The Michigan Tech men's tennis team split its first two matches of the 2016 season this weekend (Feb. 19-20). The Huskies fell to St. Cloud State 6-3 Friday before rebounding to beat St. John's (Minn.) Saturday, 7-2.

Tech's first match of the year was a close one against a strong St. Cloud State squad. The Huskies duo of Robin Duhnsen and Dos Santos earned a 9-8 victory at No. 2 doubles, and both players secured victories in this singles matches as well as Santos won at No. 2 and Duhnsen won at No. 3.

Duhnsen again led the charge on Saturday, winning his doubles match with partnet Mario Neto, 8-4, and scoring a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 3 singles. Neto, Built Yumuang, Nick Kremkow and Ricardo Paes also won in the singles competition for Tech, while the duo of Kremkow and Yumuang earned the win at No. 1 singles.

"Overall it was a good weekend," said head coach Kevin Kalinec. "Our underclassmen performed well all weekend and it's a great start to our season. We'll keep working hard in practice as we try to improve as a team." 

Michigan Tech (1-1 overall; 0-0 GLIAC) is off until March 5 when it heads to Hilton Head, S.C. for a weekend event.
