Huskies Drop Pair of Home Matches

HOUGHTON, Mich. — Michigan Tech suffered a pair of setbacks at Gates Tennis Center in men's tennis this weekend. The Huskies were defeated 8-1 by Walsh on Saturday (Mar. 21) and 9-0 by Ohio Dominican on Sunday (Mar. 22).

Built Yumuang posted the lone win vs. Walsh by defeating Ross Whittaker 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2 singles. The matches at both No. 1 and No. 2 doubles were both decided by one break. Yumuang and Nick Kremkow fell 8-6 at No. 1 while Robin Duhnsen and Illiya Chibirev lost 8-6 at No. 2.

Top singles player Javier Oliveros returned from a one-match suspension to face Ohio Dominican, but the Huskies could not take a flight against the regionally-ranked Panthers. Yumuang had the closest of the singles matches, falling 6-4, 3-6, 11-6 in a third set super tiebreaker. The Huskies' No. 3 doubles team of Luke Doskey and Chibirev posted the tightest of the doubles scores at 8-6.

"Our overall play is improving, especially in doubles," said Tech coach Kevin Kalinec. "The GLIAC is very strong top to bottom this year, but I expect us to continue to get better as we gain more experience."

Michigan Tech (1-9, 0-4 GLIAC) will host two more matches at Gates Tennis Center to finish a four-match home stand. Ferris State is up next on Saturday (Mar. 28) at 10 a.m.
