Hockey season ends in NCAA Regional

ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Michigan Tech's hockey season came to an end Friday in the NCAA Tournament Regional Semifinal. The No. 13-ranked Huskies fell 8-0 to No. 11 Penn State at the PPL Center.
The Huskies wrapped up the season with a 24-11-4 record, winning the most games since 2014-15 and hitting the 20-win plateau for the fourth time in Joe Shawhan's six years.
"Congratulations to Penn State," Shawhan said. "They obviously played a tremendous hockey game. We had a little push in the second, but pucks started to go in for them, and we weren't able to overcome adversity tonight."
"It was a tough game from the start for us," Captain Arvid Caderoth said. "We were talking about winning every shift and every five minutes but their goalie was really good."
Penn State (22-15-1) took an early lead when Tyler Paquette scored on a wraparound 2:12 into the game from Jarod Crespo and Jimmy Dowd.
Kyle Kukkonen had a pair of breakaways in the first period, looking to give Tech its first goal but PSU goaltender Liam Souliere was up to the task. He had a pad save on a partial breakaway and then a glove save on a clean breakaway.
PSU added to the lead 4:24 into the second when Jarod Crespo scored on a quick shot over the glove from the slot. Carter Schade assisted on the goal.
The Huskies had a flurry of Tech chances in the second period from Arvid Caderoth, Logan Ganie, and Jack Works, but Souliere continued his wall between the pipes.
Former WCHA Player of the Year Ashton Calder scored on a breakaway at 14:46 of the second for a three-goal lead.
Christian Berger finished off a pass from Ryan Kirwan for a 4-0 lead with 1:15 left in the second. Xander Lamppa also assisted.
Kevin Wall scored the fifth goal of the game from Connor MacEachern and Carter Schade 3:01 into the third.
Chase McLane scored from the corner with a shot that deflected in at 8:29.
Connor McMenamin finished off a quick pass by Connor MacEachern to the front while the teams skated 4-on-4 for the seventh goal of the game at 14:20.
Ryan Kirwan scored the eighth goal 23 seconds later.
Only three penalties were called in the game with Tech having the only power play.
Shots favored the Nittany Lions 39-24.
