Huskies dominate Bemidji State Saturday

HOUGHTON, Mich. – For the second Saturday in a row, the Michigan Tech hockey team scored seven goals and overwhelmed its opponent at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena. This week it was the Huskies defeating Bemidji State 7-2 to remain undefeated in the WCHA.
"Bemidji came out hard, but we got some timely goals," Tech coach Joe Shawhan said. "Our guys played well in every situation tonight, and we were fortunate to open it up in the second period."
Tech improved to 8-5-1 overall and 7-0-1-1 in the WCHA while extending its unbeaten streak to four games. Alex Smith and Dylan Steman each had a pair of goals.
"It was a great team win," Steman said. "Everybody contributed—even the guys that didn't get points. We're just trying to get better every day."
Smith opened scoring only 2:44 into the game for his second of the season, going five-hole on BSU goaltender Zach Driscoll. Tyler Rockwell set up the play when he cleared a puck off the boards to Smith rushing to the net.
Tommy Parrottino added to the lead with 2:28 left in the first, as he corralled a pass from Thomas Beretta in traffic and wristed a shot past Driscoll. Greyson Reitmeier also assisted on Parrottino's fifth goal of the season.
Tech broke it wide open in the second period with four goals in a span of 5:07. Steman scored his first of the night when he finished off a nifty behind-the-back pass from Gavin Gould at 9:07.
Alec Broetzman made it 4-0 only 27 seconds later with a wrist shot after a stretch pass from Rockwell. Seamus Donohue added the second assist on Broetzman's second of the weekend and fourth of the season.
Smith one-timed in a pass from Brian Halonen and Eric Gotz at the 12:16 mark for the 5-0 lead and the first multi-goal game of his career. He now has three goals in the last three games.
Beretta scored his second power-play goal of the weekend 2:00 later for a 6-goal lead. He sniped the upper corner past Henry Johnson with assists going to Keegan Ford and Broetzman.
Bemidji State (6-6-2, 4-3-1-0) finally got on the board 7:22 into the third period on a goal by Nick Cardelli.
Steman got his second of the game at 12:49 for the first shorthanded goal of the season for the Huskies. He went on a 2-on-1 break with TJ Polglaze and finished off a perfect setup feed. It was the first collegiate point for Polglaze on the assist. Donohue also assisted on Steman's third of the season.
Owen Sillinger scored for the Beavers with 3:54 left in the game for the 7-2 final.
Tech outshot BSU 33-28 in the game, including a dominating 21-2 shot advantage in the second period alone. Matt Jurusik picked up his sixth win of the season for the Huskies with 26 saves. His .750 winning percentage ranks seventh in the nation.
The Huskies play their rival Northern Michigan next weekend (Dec. 7-8). The two teams will meet at the Berry Events Center in Marquette on Friday and the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena on Saturday.
"It's exciting whenever we play Northern," Smith said. "We set ourselves up good. We're playing good hockey right now after taking five out of six points against a good team that just beat Minnesota State. We just have to keep playing our game for 60:00."
The puck will drop at 7:07 p.m. each night.
