Hockey Huskies Up To No. 4 In the Nation
HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech hockey team is ranked No. 4 in both the USCHO and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine polls this week. The Huskies were No. 5 last week and swept Alaska Anchorage over the weekend.
Tech received five first-place votes in both polls. It is the 14th week the Huskies have been in the polls. They have been in the top 11 all 14 weeks and were ranked No. 1 on Nov. 17.
Tech has the most wins in the country with a 24-7-1 overall record. The Black and Gold sit one point behind the nation's third-ranked team Minnesota State in the WCHA standings. Tech is 19-4-1 in the WCHA while the Mavericks are 19-3-2 in league play.
The Huskies outscored UAA 15-1 last weekend and swept the Seawolves for the second time this season. Eleven different players scored with junior Alex Petan recording his 100th career point with a third-period goal on Saturday. Petan has 40 goals and 60 assists in 108 career games and joins teammates Tanner Kero and Blake Pietila in the Century Club. Jamie Phillips picked up his fourth shutout of the season on Saturday with 35 saves. He stopped 57-of-58 shots on the weekend.
Tech and Minnesota State both have this weekend off before meeting in Mankato on Feb. 27-28 for a battle for the league's top spot. The two teams met earlier this year at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena with MSU winning 2-1 and 3-2.
