Grand Valley State Breaks Through Against Michigan Tech in 87-64 win

ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Michigan Tech men's basketball team resumed GLIAC play on the road, being overwhelmed in the latter stages of the second half, succumbing to Grand Valley State 87-64 at the GVSU Fieldhouse on Thursday evening.

"Credit Grand Valley tonight," head men's basketball coach Josh Buettner said. "They made key plays in the second half after we cut it down to four. Brad showed what he can do offensively, but as a team we need to play harder and trust each other on the floor."

Michigan Tech (4-8, 1-2 GLIAC) found itself down 9-0 before Pete Calcaterra gave the Huskies its first points off a jump shot in the paint at the 16:48 mark. Grand Valley State, who snapped a three-game losing skid (5-7, 2-0 GLIAC) got ahead by double-digits in just over a minute's time before concluding the first half ahead by 14 points (39-24). 

MTU cut the Lakers lead to single-digits from a 6-0 run capped by a Drew Barrie 3-pointer with 3:37 to play in the half before GVSU went on a run of its own.

Michigan Tech cut Grand Valley State's lead to single digits on three occasions in the second half, with a 13-3 run to start the half, seeing the Huskies trail by four points with a 3-pointer by Brad Simonsen concluding the stanza in his first shot on the second half.

Nate Abel made it a nine-point game at the 8:42 mark, although the Lakers would sustain a double-digit lead, swelling to 23 points by the final buzzer's sound.

The Lakers had eight offensive rebounds in the first half and got multiple Huskies in foul trouble early with their post players, more specifically William Dunn, who led all scorers with 11 points in the first half, while going 7-for-7 from the charity stripe.

Michigan Tech had 19 turnovers and 26 fouls, which spearheaded the recipe for disaster.

Tomashek led three Huskies in double figure scoring with 14 points. Simonsen posted his second-consecutive 13-point outing, while Gherezgher accounted for 11. Drew Barrie had a team-leading five rebounds, with two on the offensive end.

Ethan Alderink led all scorers with 16 points as the Lakers saw Trevon Gunter and Kohen Thompson both grabbing a team-high four rebounds.
