HOUGHTON, Mich. — Northwood bombed in 12-of-26 3-pointers while Michigan Tech made just 11-of-38 attempts from long range. That led to a 73-63 Timberwolves win at the SDC Gym.

The difference in shooting accuracy was the difference in the game. NU played a two-three zone for a majority of the contest, leaving Tech with open shots all game. The Huskies couldn't made enough.

The hosts went an eight-minute stretch in the opening half with just one field goal. The Timberwolves built a double-digit lead during that span and went into halftime with a 38-27 advantage.

The gap grew to as many as 21 in the second half. Connor McLeod's 3-pointer with 9:33 to play pulled the Black and Gold back within 13. NU continued to hit timely shots down the stretch to hold the Huskies off.

Nic Stoll's layup in the final minute made it an eight-point margin, but that would be as close as the Huskies would get.

"Never in a million years would I have thought we'd shoot that poorly against a zone defense," said Tech coach Kevin Luke. "Credit Northwood. They made a good decision to stay in the zone and hit a lot of big shots of their own.

"It's disappointing to have a day like this in a do-or-die game."

Michigan Tech needed a win to keep its hopes of a GLIAC Tournament berth alive. The Huskies (9-15, 8-12 GLIAC) are now three games back in the standings of the fifth-place team in the North Division with only two games to go.

Northwood finished at 51 percent from the floor and held a 38-35 rebounding advantage. Tech shot just 37 percent from the field and 29 percent from behind the arc.

Kyle Monroe paced Tech in points (13) and rebounds (nine). Jeff Gregory also had nine rebounds. Bryan Heath (12) and Dillon Gordon (11) joined Monroe in double figures in points.

Michigan Tech has two more games remaining on its 2015-16 schedule—both against Upper Peninsula rivals. Saturday (Feb. 20), it's Lake Superior State coming to the SDC Gym for a 3 p.m. tipoff.
