NO. 8 HOCKEY HUSKIES HIT MILESTONES IN SWEEP OF
CHARGERS
No. 8-ranked Michigan Tech dominated Alabama Huntsville with wins
of 5-0 and 11-1 win last weekend to sweep their second consecutive
WCHA series. Junior goaltender Jamie Phillips notched his third
shutout of the season in Friday’s (Jan. 30) victory. On
Saturday (Jan. 31), senior co-captains Tanner Kero and Blake
Pietila both recorded their 100th career points as Kero had two
goals and two assists and Pietila had three assists. As a team,
Tech now has a record of 20-7-1, marking the program’s first
20-win season since the 1987-88 campaign (20-20-1). The Huskies
have won four straight and five of their last six games.
WINTER CARNIVAL WEEK
It’s Winter Carnival week on the Michigan Tech campus. Tech hosts Bemidji State in a WCHA hockey series at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena. The winner of the two-game, total-goal series will be given the MacInnes Cup. Games are Friday (Feb. 6) at 7:07 p.m. and Saturday at 5:07 p.m.
TECH AND NORTHERN WOMEN TO SQUARE OFF ON FOX UP
The top two teams in 2014-15 GLIAC Women’s Basketball North Division Preseason Poll will finally square off when Michigan Tech hosts Northern Michigan Monday (Feb. 2) night at the SDC Gym. The game will be televised live on Fox UP throughout most of the Upper Peninsula and several counties in Wisconsin. The Huskies, who are on an eight-game winning streak, enter the contest with a 17-1 overall record and 13-1 league slate. The Wildcats (12-6 overall) are three games back at 10-4 in the GLIAC North. The game will feature the GLIAC’s top two defenses (points allowed per game: Tech 57.5, Northern 59.5).
BIG WEEK AHEAD FOR TECH MEN
The Michigan Tech men’s basketball team finished off January with an 8-2 record during the month. The Huskies are 13-5 overall with eight regular season games remaining.
