Michigan Tech among national leaders in NCAA Academic Success Rate

HOUGHTON, Mich. – The NCAA recently released its latest Division II graduation rate data, including the division's Academic Success Rate (ASR).

Michigan Tech student-athletes graduated at an 87 percent rate in the latest publishing of the ASR. Michigan Tech has hit at least an 86 percent mark every year since 2014-15. The Division II overall national average for this year's ASR is 73 percent.

The ASR is based on student-athletes who entered Michigan Tech in 2009-10 through 2012-13. A total of 12 of the 14 teams recorded an ASR of 80 percent or better in their sports. Men's and women's Nordic skiing, women's cross country, women's track & field, and volleyball achieved a perfect 100 percent ASR.

"The academic success of our student-athletes is extremely important to Michigan Tech athletics,"  said Director of Athletics Suzanne Sanregret. "An 87 percent Academic Success Rate is a testament to the quality of the student-athletes that we recruit, the commitment from the coaches to focus on academics as well as athletics, and the holistic approach that we take as a department to support them."

All Division II teams earned an ASR that ranks higher than the national average in their sport, including men's basketball (93), men's cross country and track & field (91), football (77), women's basketball (92), soccer (88), and women's tennis (88).

Over 50 percent of Michigan Tech student-athletes are pursuing an engineering degree. Twenty-two percent are majoring in science and arts and 20 percent are in business.

The NCAA Graduate Success Rate (Division I) and ASR (Divisions II and III) were formed when presidents and chancellors in all three NCAA divisions called for the Association to develop a measure of graduation success that better reflects transfer patterns and the population of student-athletes in higher education.
