Inducted August 3, 1985

An Upper Peninsula native, U.J. (Bert) Noblet was the organizer of Michigan Tech's forestry department. He served as department head from 1936 until his retirement in 1962. Coming to Houghton in 1929 as athletic director, Noblet coached football, hockey and track, while managing many other sports events. His three sons, Jack, Dick, and Pete, all played hockey at Michigan Tech, with Jack earning All-American honors as a goalkeeper.

Noblet guided the forestry department for 26 years, transforming it from a small program with 10 students in 1936 into one of the largest departments in the University. He was instrumental in obtaining sizeable gifts of property for research and education, making Michigan Tech a national leader in forestry research.

Noblet received several awards for his many contributions to the University and forestry research. He was inducted into the Upper Peninsula Hall of Fame in 1978, and has received the Society of American Foresters Distinguished Service Award, the Michigan Tech Faculty Association's Award for Meritorious Service and the Distinguished Service Award for Forestry.
