Robert Olson
Inducted October 29, 1994

The owner of WMPL and WZRK radio stations in Hancock, Michigan, Bob Olson has been the voice of Michigan Tech athletics for a quarter of a century. He is being inducted into the MTU Sports Hall of Fame as a builder.

Olson began broadcasting MTU athletic events back in 1969 when he purchased WMPL and WZRK and moved to the Copper Country from Hurley, Wisconsin.

His first year in the area he broadcast men's basketball and football, before adding hockey to the lineup in 1970-71.

Today, Olson's station has one of the most comprehensive broadcast packages of any station in the nation, as WMPL and WZRK carry MTU football, volleyball, hockey, men's basketball, and women's basketball.

A true community-minded individual, Olson has also served as president of the MTU Blueline Club (1987-91), as a member of the MTU Community Advisory Committee, on MTU's Sports Promotion Committee (1987-92), and on the Hockey Coach Search Committee (1992).

In Addition, Olson is the originator of the WMPL College Hockey Poll and his station also serves as the clearinghouse for all of the country's college hockey scores.
