Waxing and Athlete Facilities
Michigan Tech is offering three options for team waxing at the race venue:
1. Rent A Portable Wax Trailer
We have 12 portable wax trailers available to rent on a first-come first-served basis. Trailers include baseboard heat and power outlets, steps and are block leveled. Trailers will be provided daily garbage service and snow removal. Trailers will be accessible starting Saturday, December 31, 2022, through Sunday, January 8, 2023. Rental costs are as follows:
- 8’ x 30’ = $1,800
- 10’ x 40’ = $1,950
- 12’ x 60’ = $2,200
To reserve a portable wax trailer email your team name and trailer size request to thjsmith@mtu.edu. We will reply to your email with availability and a link for payment. Trailer rentals are not confirmed until payment is received. Trailer access begins at noon on December 30. No early access wlil be available.
2. Self-Provided Wax Trailers
Teams that bring their own trailers will be provided outdoor power hookup and parking at the venue for the entirety of the event for $300. Make your reservation and payment no later than 5 pm (ET) December 28, 2022, through the MTU Online Ticketing website. Trailers cannot arrive at the trailhead until noon on December 30.
3. Provided Wax Rooms
Michigan Tech will provide seven wax rooms at no cost for teams in the System Control Nordic Waxing Center at the trailhead. Teams will be assigned wax rooms based on team size. To reserve space for your team in the Systems Control Nordic Waxing Center, email your team name and total number of team event participants to thjsmith@mtu.edu. Deadline is December 28, 2022, at 5 pm ET. Wax rooms will not be available until noon on December 30.
Additional Note: Outdoor power for team tents will be available upon request. Email chughes@mtu.edu by December 28, 2022, at 5 pm ET to request outdoor power.
Seeding, Starts, Results
- Seeding will be done according to the U.S. Ski and Snowboard 2022 Nordic Competition Guide. See especially section 38 (page 38).
- Results will be posted to the official website, http://usnationals.
mtu.edu , within two hours of becoming official. - Drones, Aerial Photography and Cameras:
- Drones may not be used on the Tech Trails without explicit, written permission of the Jury.
National Team Selections
The U.S. Cross Country Ski Championship week includes the selection of several teams that compete nationally and internationally. Results also factor into the selection of the U.S. Ski Team.

- U23/Junior World Championships
- U18 Scandinavian Championship, and the World Junior Championship
Prize Money
The prize payouts for U.S. Cross Country Championships are as follows:
- $1,200
- $600
- $300
To be eligible for prize money, competitors must be active FIS members prior to the publication of the start list.
Awards
- Unofficial flower ceremonies will take place immediately after competitors seeded in Groups A and B have finished. The official awards will take place at the banquet on Friday, January 6, and following the final race on Saturday, January 7.
- Competitors absent from the official awards will forfeit their prizes.
- All competitors are eligible for prize money
- If a foreign competitor resides in the top three, two flower ceremonies will take place:
- A ceremony with foreign competitors collecting prize money and acknowledging place.
- A ceremony with only the U.S. citizens acknowledging the top three winners of the U.S. Championships event.
- A memento will be provided to all participant athletes and official coaches.
SuperTour Race - Saturday, January 7, 2023
The Freestyle Sprint on Saturday, January 7, is not a national championship race, but it is a SuperTour race.
- Registration fee: $45
- Prize money award for top 6 finishers
- Prize money awarded only to those with a current FIS license (available through US Ski & Snowboard Member Services), listed as active on the FIS website, an appearing on the current FIS International Ranking List
- Prize money:
- 1st - $750
- 2nd - $500
- 3rd - $250
- 4th - $200
- 5th - $150
- 6th - $100
Trailhead Rules and Etiquette
Dogs are not allowed at the trailhead nor the venue.
Parking at the trailhead is limited; additional parking is across Sharon Avenue in the Michigan Tech parking lots.
There are no warming facilities at the trailhead; please plan accordingly. Michigan Tech's athletic facility, the Student Development Complex, is a five-minute walk from the trailhead and open to competitors, coaches, and visitors.
Athletic Training Needs
Michigan Tech will have a Certified Athletic Trainer on-site for all race days and on-call during practice days. Emergency equipment will be available at the groomer's building. Michigan Tech EMS will be on-site for all races, and on-call during practice days. MORE INFORMATION
