Emergency Action Plan

Emergency Personnel:

A member of the sports medicine staff, as well as Tech EMS, will be at the trails during all races. Members of the sports medicine staff and other team personnel are available for practices. 

Emergency Communication:

The certified athletic trainer carries a cell phone and can contact Public Safety at 911 via cell phone. The closest landline phone is located in the OAP Rental Center inside the Systems Control Wax Building (906) 487-2290. 

Emergency Equipment: 

Equipment (First Aid Kit) will be available in the venue at all practices. Equipment (AED, Splint kits and Crutches) will be available in the main athletic training facility during practices. Equipment (First Aid Kit, AED, Splint kits and Crutches) will be available at the venue during all races. Tech EMS will have SxS available during all races. 

The closest public AED is located in the Nordic Wax Center Community Room.

Roles of First Responder:

  1. Immediate care of the injured or ill athlete will be provided by Team Physician or Certified Athletic Trainer with assistance being provided by athletic training student aides and/or other team personnel.

    1. If an incident occurs on trail, Tech EMS will go out, provide immediate care, and be responsible for transportation of student-athletes. 

    2. Tech EMS to connect with Mike Abbot (race director) for best directions to injured athlete.

  2. Activation of the Emergency Medical System (EMS) will be done by Certified Athletic Trainer, athletic training student aides or other team personnel at the discretion of the Physician or Certified Athletic Trainer.

    1. 911 from cell phone

    2. 8-911 from landline phone

    3. Provide the following information

      1. Name, location, and telephone number of the caller

        1. To aid in the location communication, the use of the Tech Trails emergency location numbered signage is recommended.

      2. Number of athletes injured

      3. Condition of athlete(s)

      4. First aid treatment initiated by first responder

      5. Directions to the scene of injury

      6. Any additional information requested

  3. Emergency equipment retrieval will be performed by the Certified Athletic Trainer, athletic training student aides, other team personnel at the discretion of the Physician or Certified Athletic Trainer.

  4. Directions of EMS to scene

    1. Public Safety, athletic training student aides or other team personnel will meet the EMS and direct them to the scene.

    2. Scene control: Public Safety and/or other team personnel will move and keep by-standers away from the area.

Venue Directions: 

Enter the Michigan Tech Trails access road from Sharon Ave. Continue straight on the access road and meet the injured athlete at the Systems Control Nordic Wax Center. The Systems Control Nordic Wax Center will be the first building you see as you continue on the access road. 

Drug Testing Plan:

  1. Location- testing will be carried out in the Hockey Educational Center.

  2. Transportation- a 12 passenger van will be used to transport the athletes and monitor to and from the testing site.

    1. A certified athletic trainer or coach will accompany the athletes during transportation.

  3. Race Volunteers will be trained by USADA staff for monitoring post race.
